In recent weeks, there’s been growing public concern about cases of botulism linked to unlicensed injectable treatments. At Ivy & Co. Aesthetics, we want to offer clarity on what this means, how to protect yourself, and why choosing a medically qualified practitioner matters.

✅ What’s happened?

According to statements from UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) and Trading Standards, a number of individuals have been hospitalised with botulism-like symptoms following unregulated cosmetic procedures. These incidents appear to be linked to counterfeit or improperly administered botulinum toxin products sourced outside of licensed supply chains.

Botulinum toxin is a prescription-only medicine (POM) that should only be prescribed following a face-to-face consultation by a qualified prescriber. It must be sourced from a licensed UK pharmacy.

💉 Why does this matter?

Botulinum toxin is a potent neurotoxin. When administered correctly and in medical-grade formulations, it can be highly effective for cosmetic use. But:

• Fake or improperly diluted products pose serious health risks.

• Non-prescribers offering anti-wrinkle injections may bypass safety checks.

• The risks are not just cosmetic — they can be life-threatening.
